Do You Think Integrity Matters in the Workplace? You Bet!
You’ve probably already heard the definition of integrity, in the words of C.S. Lewis, recited hundreds of times:
Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Well, when it comes to the workplace, should you even bother? Do you think integrity matters in the workplace?
Here’s an example of why integrity matters in the workplace
For the sake of an illustration, let’s suppose a guy named Joe and a guy named Bill work at an ice cream shop. Joe is a hard worker who knows that integrity matters in the workplace, but Bill on the other hand, is lazy and doesn’t think that integrity matters in the workplace.
Their manager tells Bill that the floor needs to be swept before the customers start arriving. Instead, Bill ignores the request, and while no one is looking, fixes himself a large ice cream cone with extra gummy bears. After all, Bill got away with it everyday. While Joe was busy in the back, Bill savored every second of his stolen ice cream cone. When Joe came back, he noticed that the floor wasn’t properly swept, and he decided to sweep it himself, not knowing that it was Bill’s responsibility in the first place.
After a while, their manager went to check on how everything was going. To his relief, he saw how well the floor was swept, and commended Bill on a good job. Bill accepted the praise contentedly. When the manager’s eye, however, caught the gummy bear jar, noticing that they were all gone, he began to suspect something. It was too early in the day for the gummy bears to be all out, and besides, the customers hardly ever requested gummy bears on their ice cream. He decided to check the security footage for what he inevitably suspected. Maybe one of his employees lacked the concept that integrity matters in the workplace.
